This sequel to The Madwoman in the Attic focuses on twentieth-century women writers. Volumes One and Two analyze literature and society between the 1880s and 1930s, specifically the rise of the New Woman and the suffrage movement, and the corresponding crisis of masculinity. Volume Three focuses mainly on World War Two fiction. Authors mentioned include Bowen, Braddon, Broughton, Bryher, Hall, Meynell, Richardson, Sackville-West, Townsend Warner, West and Woolf.
