Pollard, Wendy, Rosamond Lehmann and Her Critics: The Vagaries of Literary Reception (Ashgate, 2004)

An exemplary reception study which foregrounds "the cultural and commercial fields in which Lehmann's writing was situated". In seeking to understand the marginalisation of Lehmann, Pollard considers factors including changes in reading demographics, book reviewing, publishing and marketing practices, as well as the growing intellectual hostility to the middlebrow and the gendering of the literary establishment. Following an opening chaper on cultural and critical frameworks, which includes a section on middlebrow as a critical category, Pollard adopts a roughly chronological approach to Lehmann's career, concluding with a chapter on her literary legacy.
