Actually a study of the 1930s, which combines literary criticism, film studies, cultural studies and historical research. Chapters include: The Politics of Depression, Suburban Pastoral, The Public Schools and the Great War, Theorists of the Elite, The Working Class Writer, British Film and Hollywood, The Documentary Film Movement, the Spanish Civil War and The Approach of War. Focuses overwhelmingly on male authors; the only women discussed are Brittain, Leavis and Woolf.
