A socialist-feminist study, combining literary criticism and cultural history to examine women's political, personal and sexual lives as represented in interwar women's writing. There are chapters on the question of gender, nation and class in women's autobiography (Brittain); literary spinsterhood (Mansfield, Mayor); lesbian representations (Woolf, Hall); femininity and feminism (Bowen, Lehmann, West); and anti-fascist writings (Woolf, Burdekin).
